Actually, Ford has had this technology for longer than BMW. They just refused to put it in cars because of external pressure by the big oil companies. Now that there is a big push to get away from oil, it has allowed them to move forward without worry or problems.

So? Setup a solar power plant and use its output to split hydrogen from water. With enough people using hydrogen it would pay for itself in no time even if you sold hydrogen at $1 per gallon.

BMW has been doing this for years, they even sell a hydrogen 7 that can run off gasoline or hydrogen... nothing new, but good to see more companies doing this because electric and fuel cell is just crap. BMW is using liquid hydrogen, which is much better then gas form hydrogen, which is what most companies are experimenting with.
