The housing isn't important. It just helps things be neat and clean. If you want, You could just surround your laser diode with newspaper. Those diodes are SEN-SA-TIVE! So be careful what you use as filler. (Newspaper was an example; that would be a very bad choice.)

Nope, Any little junk store might have one. Electronic stores are almost guaranteed to have them cheep. Just don't buy a new one and you should be good.
